In the Japanese version, Picky and Pokey clearly get a harsh beating from their dad. Talking with Pokey afterwards, we find out they got a good spanking.
In EarthBound, the sound effect is replaced with the "angry yelling/grumbling" sound effect, and Pokey says his dad told him he doesn't get any dessert for the rest of the decade.
