thistle is also known as holy thistle, lady's thistle, Mary thistle, Marian thistle, St. Mary thistle, silybum, and Silybum marianum, Around the 16th century the milk thistle became quite popular and almost all parts of it were eaten. The roots can be eaten raw or boiled and roasted. The young shoots in spring can be cut down to the root and boiled. The spiny bracts on the flower head were eaten in the past like globe artichoke, and the stems (after peeling) can be soaked overnight to remove bitterness and then stewed. The leaves can be trimmed of prickles and boiled and make a good spinach substitute, they can also be added raw to salads,While you need gloves to collect them, the stems are very easy to clean,every part of the Milk Thistle can be eaten. I collected some young shoots this morning, simply cut the stem, remove the leaves,The leaves can also be trimmed to remove the prickles and boiled to make a dish similar to spinach, Yarrow or Achillea millefolium has many different uses. The best one is as a tea for reducing fever. It is one of the BEST fever reducers out there.   • I live around Abilene TX. in a lot of ways OK city OK is not that much different.I found out the other day that mesquite bean are good to,and the bean can be made in to flour.Also mistletoe can be eaten, but I'm not really sure about the mistletoe, i always heard it was poison.

  • @mogges1 mistletoe is poisonous, mesquite bean flour can be made in to flour.

  • That mulberry is also good for all-suers.Now on the Yarrow plant how do i tell the difference from the poison one. you said if the yarrow has a back dot in the middle of that mean its safe?.Where i live Here in TX we i have a tree call a prickly ash. which is also good for tooth pains. and othere pains.AWW man you mean I can eat the hackaberry berries i didnt know that one.shoot i have been cutting them down around my yard.will i still have one hackaberry left

  • Here in Tx where I live you can buy prickly pear in the stores.Also the berries are excilent and the berries make a good wine and jelly
