Norman Borlaug, the father of the "Green Revolution" who is widely credited with saving millions of lives by breeding wheat and other crops that brought agricultural self-sufficiency to developing countries around the world, died on 12 September 2009 in Texas. He was 95 --see IRRI's tribute Dr. Borlaug in Rice Today magazine at http://www.scribd.com/doc/34625041/Rice-Today-Vol-8-No-4 Also see http://archive.irri.org/publications/today/borlaug.asp
Borlaug, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970, was hailed by Time magazine in 1999 as one of the 100 most influential minds of the 20th century. Using the new strains, Mexico, which had imported 60% of its wheat in the early 1940s, became self-sufficient by 1956. Using Borlaug's techniques, scientists soon developed similar high-yield strains of rice and corn.
In this video clip, he inspires wheat research trainees--in both English and Spanish--at the experiment station of CIANO (Centro de Investigaciones Agricolas del Noroeste), near Ciudad Obregon, Mexico, on 4 April 1993. Not specifically discussing wheat here, he talks about the complicated world we live in, the thinking of the philosopher-historian Will Durant ( biography at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Will_Durant ), and developing ones talents to the fullest.
