  • As AwsiDooger mentioned, this was on the undercard of Secretariat's Marlboro, and although his was clearly the biggest race of the day, Desert Vixen was facing what was considered to be a similar challenge as a three-year-old facing her elders.

Susan's Girl was a champion, but Desert Vixen also ran off Convenience and Light Hearted, who were Grade I quality winning speedsters, and held off Summer Guest, a Grade I quality winning closer. Tremendous race -- thanks for sharing!

  • Great insight. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

    Thanks for watching.

  • Wow,

I see some Man O War and war Relic in her backround...she really put it to them....she just seemed to be out for a romp...not pushing at all....

Only 12 when she passed....Was she bred or have any babies...??

  • The famous Rough'N Tumble was also in her pedigree, sire of the legendary Dr. Fager.

Yes, Desert Vixen was hand-ridden and eased to the wire.

She did throw some foals, but sadly, only four as far as I've found. She was bred to Damascus, Northern Dancer, Roberto (sire of Dynaformer, Barbaro's papa) along with What A Pleasure, sire of Foolish and Honest Pleasure.

    Have a great night.

  • Desert Vixen was an awesome filly! Thanks for posting these videos of this beautiful girl!

  • Roberto,,,,

Named after Roberto Clemente...the Galbreaths got out of baseball here in Pittsburgh.

  • Thank you for your continuous support. I'm glad to have shared it.

She was a 3 year old here. She sure made mincemeat of this field.

    Take care.

  • Desert Vixen was awesome that year. Beating defending champ Susan's Girl by that margin is very impressive. Both were Eclipse winners.

This race was run on the same day as Secretariat's Marlboro. In fact, Desert Vixen tied the track record of 1:46 1/5 before Secretariat lowered it to 1:45 2/5.

Notice Desert Vixen won in a hand ride and was eased in the final yards. Belmont was extremely fast in '73, although people get upset when I post that.
