I was in high school watching this race when this was going on. I'm a huge Sterling Marlin so I went nuts when he made his last lap pass and successfully held on to 2nd. I was let down though because he was relegated to a 38th place finish after the big wreck happened =(
Mark Martin's "awesome Ford power under the hood" would blow on lap 7 of the Daytona 500, resulting in Mark finishing dead last in the biggest race of the season.
72-Shelmerdine: listen to his interview: that tells the story. Add to that no breaks in the race for him, no starts in '03, meaning no provisionals, 7 that his car was 1st or 2nd slowest in all practices. Plus, when his engine was in that draft in this race, it was the fastest it had ever gone & pushed & eventually, it took its toll. Good effort, but he eventually made the 500 2 years later, so that's good.
Elliott Sadler DOMINATED!! I wished Petty would give him a good running Ford like Robert Yates did.
