Also may be a cylinder; but inside observatories, one telescope and a "Schmidt" camera are used to take pictures of sky.

this dome shape is the rail for the heavy Schmidt camera, so, it moves in spherical coordinates.

In this little observatory, only the telescope and a follower mechanism can be mounted, Schmidt cameras are so big and heavy monsters, I only know this at INAOE: watch?v=PxfhJzUfIhI&feature=colike

  • @omzi79 It's one of the best shapes to protect you and the equipment from wind, dew and light while still giving the best views of the sky in any direction.

  • Great job gents! Well done!

  • This might be a dumb question, but why are observatories shaped like domes?

  • Awesome
