Here's a little demonstration of me setting up and jamming with DSMIDIWiFi, an incredible homebrew application for the Nintendo DS by 0xtob and TheRain.

It allows any homebrew-capable Nintendo DS to send and receive MIDI messages over WiFi, turning it either into a MIDI controller for your synths, or turning the DS into a controllable MIDI synth module.

First part of this video shows how I set up my Gentoo Linux machine to act as a controllable MIDI slave for the DS, using JACK and FluidSynth.

The second part shows me using the DS to do a bit of jamming. :) Most of it is just random, but for some reason I played the riff from Gorillaz' Feel Good Inc., and of course the obligatory Mario Bros. overworld theme. ;D

Note how there's next to no latency. It's hardly noticeable at all and doesn't affect my ability to play the synthesizer live. This, however is different story if you use Windows due to its less flexible MIDI implementation, hence I prefer Linux and JACK (which is brilliant for audio work).

Thanks 0xtob and TheRain for making this cool stuff happen!

Hope you enjoy the video and excuse my couple bad notes. ;D

  • wat's an IP Address?

  • damn you're really good at this!

  • wow. if it was me or my sister it would take years of practice to get the music jammin' like that.

  • Thats an amazing application! Your really good at playing keyboard with a stylus too that cool!

  • whats the first song called?

  • WOW.

I was wondering does the DS Keyboard software run standalone without an external synth?

Not that its not great, its bloody excellent, but I'd like to know if you can jam with it not using a computer or synth module but with internal sounds?

    Cheers.

  • lol at all the linux discussion..lol at the end..it s linux rofl .. but i don t mind,i like the 8bit sound in the back.

  • I love this but for some reason i can only use it when the wifi router is connected to the internet. This is slightly annoying as that means cant really use it live.

    Anyone else have this problem?

  • you should look into the stylus you can wrap around your finger, you could use two pretty easy then.

  • i like open suse 11.1
