For young kids watching, it's important to learn the following.

1st clip: Jason Kidd is caught in a bad position in the low post. He should be 45 degrees of his player - and thus, having a hand to prevent the easy pass or staying in front of his player.

To counter the potential post move, Jason Kidd plant his feet as wide is possible to prevent Kobe from going around him (some players also put up their arms - (see some youtube clips of technical defenders such as Bruce Bowen and Shane Battier, if you want to practise this). Jason Terry (blue, 31) comes in the for the double team and Kobe dishes it out to Steve Blake to draw Terry back to Blake and receives the ball from Fisher to resume his post moves on Kidd.

Kidd sees this coming and uses his strong upper body strength to quickly force Kobe Bryant further towards the perimeter off the dribble. Notice how Kidd immediately withdraws his hands and body the minute Kobe collects the ball. This is to prevent Kobe from going up and under and either collect the shooting foul or to prevent him from going around him.

Generally when an entry pass is made into the low post as such - and note you should NOT be allowing players to receive entry passes - a defender should concede that not much can be done (apart from double teaming) except to hold your ground (legs spread apart to prevent to prevent the triple around) make the shot as difficult as you can. The hardest one would be forcing your opponent into the very difficult reverse fadeway, as shown by Kobe.

2nd Clip: This is something that Shane Battier uses frequently on taller and faster opposition players such as Kevin Durant, who can create their own shot off the dribble. Blocking the vision of the shot instead of challenging the eyesight of the opposing player is sometimes just as crucial as challenging the shot (especially when in this case, Kobe is clearly faster than Kidd)

3rd clip is probably a clip of what not to do when defending an aggressive post post player. In this case, Kidd is too passive with backing down and should be planting his feet to the ground, using his body to prevent the bumps and making use his hands (either sidewards to block the entry pass into the paint) or over his head to challenge the shot. Kobe probably could of presses his height advantage further and shoot over Kidd (and let's face it, at 38, Kidd doesn't have the hops that he used to have) instead of a yet, another difficult fadeaway.

Thanks for reading.

  • @TheBlackMamba243 I definately don't 'hate' Kobe. I hold him in the highest regard as the best player of the current era. I only wanted to show the viewers various defence techniques that were employed by Kidd during some key stretches of the game.

  • Kidd also locked down Durant, Westbrook, Lebron, and Wade in crunchtime. He played absolutely amazing defense this postseason. What a legend.

  • its just that kobe is not hitting his shots..... shane battier tony allen ray allen used the same style against kobe the only difference is kobe hitting those tough shots..... and you only notice it because lakers loss against the mavs 4-0...its just like you want to say how a great deffender kidd is and his the difference in that series because he stop kobe...... kobe can shoot at any kind of defense the only difference is sometimes it goes in sometimes not...and this time it doesnt fall..

  • under rated defender

  • the real reason why kidd kicked kobe's ass is because unlike other faggot perimeter players who d this clown up kidd actually got in his chest and fought him for poistion on the blocks. this type of manly defense cripples kobe bryant mentally. kobe is used to throwing himself into players when he posts up which is an offensive foul btw and, they back the fuck off not kidd. kidd should of d him in the finals in 02 maybe they could of won a game

  • @HeavyCrackerr totally agreed...i think kidd is one of the greatest point guards ever played the game and theres no question bout his defensive skills. but objectively in this video the shots kobe missed are not coz of the defense.

  • At 0:56 that's an easy steal on NBA 2K12.

  • all i saw was that kobe missed a couple shots that he normally makes

  • @campersdemise i respect that! kobe fan here too!

  • Kidd finally became a The Man!!!He deserved that Ring!!!!

  • @TheSTONERBLUES word

  • @fullybuiltcivic1 Being a good player is not only shown by a championship ring that you have. There's a lot of good and deserving player that don't have a ring but yet they are respectable in the name of the game.Just Like Patrick Ewing,Chris Mullin,John Stockton,Steve Nash,Shawn Kemp and many more. And glad Dirk and Kidd got their first championship ring. They've only got one championship ring, but I respect them a lot more than Kobe or Lebron or any other basketball player of today.hate me..idc!
