Once you learn the basics, it's up to that fighter or practitioner to incorporate his own style of fighting. Why is that? Because styles will limit your mobility in fighting. You have to constantly change your fighting styles every time or the fighter will figure out your fighting style. That is why Bruce Lee is the best. His Jeet Kune Do philosophy is right. Create your own fighting method that works for you but learn the basics first.
Taekwondo is a modern art and is a hybrid of Karate just like any system. What Choi did was create a different style of fighting which works best for him. You can't do Taekwondo and Karate forever because it hurts on your joints and muscles. Karate is from Kung Fu. Choi incorporated western style boxing into his traditional style. However, other martial arts have this kinda of fighting style as well. That's why styles limit a fighter. Bruce Lee would never learn from this master.
i did shotokan karate and judo for 4 years , then in the last 3 years i started choi kwang do... its changed my lifee. if you want to look cool and do no dammage do karate if you wanna realy learn how to fight do choi kwang doo
@derrickwitz Old comment I know, but this request is impossible, as I've not yet seen a CKD school where you could prove yourself in any meaningful way: they don't spar and they don't pressure test their self defence ability with any seriousness. You could go along, but you'd just be expected to join in with their various drills.
@kohanjin So presumably you give credit where credit is due and call Tae-kwon-do by it's correct name, Shotokan karate? Then Shotokan karate needs to give credit where credit's due and call itself simply "Te", then some form of kung fu, etc.
Eventually you've got to be prepared to acknowledge that something is different enough from its parent arts to warrant a new name altogether.
@kohanjin I wasn't being disrespectful. I consider myself quite open minded regarding Martial Arts. I disagree with the majority of what you said. But like yourself I don't wish to get into a debate. I have got into way too many in the past, and frankly no one gets anywhere.

The moment this "grandmaster" heard what that black gentleman said (around 2:20-2:25), he should've thrown him out.

I met Grandmaster Choi once, a very nice and humble man. Master P used to be the head instructor at my Dojo!
