i saw klampar on teesside more than 20 years ago when he was coming to the end of his career. He was at least 2 stone heavier than this clip but I saw my favourite shot ever. He was playing a Chinease defender. Klampar forced him way back off the table, the defender lobbed it 30 feet in the air and Klampar smacked it literally straight off the bounce and it was a wonder the ball didnt slice in 2. The crowd roared. Awesome. Would love to see that match again. Cant remember other guys name
this is not the best match to go by as cai made everyone look silly due to the fact that there was no 2 color rubber rule at the time. what makes you think the Titans (jonyer, klampar, surbek, gergely) didnt use short serves and returns; and that they couldnt play more than 2 or 3 good topspins in a row? they would wipe the floor in loop-to-loop contests with modern players.
It is interesting to see how drastically the table tennis changed since these Klampar times. This first generation of players that used speed-gluing (Klampar, Jonyer, Surbek, ...) still dod not absorb their new equipment very well. They rarely used short services or returns, they could not play good blocks, and hardly could play two-three good topspins in a row. But at that time, it was enough. It's nice to see that contemporary table tennis is much more interesting...

I like the 2 color rule and glad it stopped players from hiding and they had to use skills vs deception.

it is against cai zenhua. klampar looks bad because cai was virtually unplayable at that time. he used anti-spin and it was before the 2 color rule.
