ZHANG:
The two police officers accused of killing a teenage boy in Greece are now being held in jail to await trial. The move has failed to subdue the backlash of rioting that has gone on for the last six days. Heres an update.

STORY:
Gangs of high school students joined in the latest wave of violence in Greece as police stations were hit in a wave of surprise attacks.

Police stations across Athens were targeted, in some cases by youths hurling stones and petrol bombs. Buildings and vehicles have been badly damaged.

Earlier a group of about 100 students blocked traffic and occupied the offices of the city's mayor.

Others staging a sit-in at the university clashed with police as a sixth day of rioting kicked off before dawn.

The trouble ignited after police shot dead a 15-year-old boy on Saturday.

One officer has been charged with murder over the killing of Alexandros Grigoropoulos.

Another is accused of abetting.

Both are being held in jail to await trial.

The Greek government is pledging compensation for the owners of shops and businesses wrecked in the rioting.

Some say they can't afford to wait for the cash at such a critical time of year.

[Michael Bernelos, Store Owner]:
"The issue is not if and when and how they are going to give me the money. I don't care. I do care about getting the shop running again. I want the repair workers to get out of here so I can open the store."

The worst unrest Greece has seen since the aftermath of military rule more than 30 years ago is also worrying some foreign tourists.

[Ikakiu, Chinese Tourist]:
"A lot of people come across suddenly, and the bombs, and the burnings, and the angry people. I am so nervous."

[Chris Benham, American Tourist]:
We drove through a neighborhood that didn't look well maintained and we were a bit nervous. It was kind of a little nerve-wracking driving through there."

The violence has plunged Greece's already-troubled conservative government further into crisis.

Speculation is growing that there will be a general election within the next few months.
