The 2008 N.H.L. Conference Semifinals were filled with domination and despair. We all went into these series thinking that we were in for some really memorable matchups. However, it seemed each series had one team that was ready to dominate while one team really just didn't show up to play at all.
PITTSBURGH PENGUINS VS NEW YORK RANGERS
Fans in both Pittsburgh and New York were very excited to see this classic rivalry take place between the Penguins and Rangers. Unfortunately the New York Rangers went down far easier than anyone could have expected. The Pittsburgh dominated play from Game 1. New York Ranger fans were teased of hopes of an epic comeback in Game 4 when Jaromir Jagr, Scott Gomez, Sean Avery, Henrik Lundquivst and the Rangers shutout the Penguins 3-0. The veteran, Jaromire Jagr, had a truely great performance in his 2 rounds of the playoffs with 15 points. However Jagr and the Rangers were no match of the powerhouse of emerging stars for the Penguins such as Sydney Crosby (17 Points) and Evgeni Malkin (15 Points). Also, Marian Hossa has really settled in becoming a major role in the Pittsburgh Penguin's offense with 11 points. The Pittsburgh Penguins ended up winning the series 4-1. They will go onto to meet the Philadelphia Flyers in Round 3.
PHILLADELPHIA FLYERS VS. MONTREAL CANADIENS
A lot of Montreal Canadiens fans were disappointed to see their Habs go down so easy to the Philidelphia Flyers. Even more of a shame for Montreal was to see the young goalie Cory Price gets absolutely torn apart by the offensive threats of the Philadelphia Flyers. The players that have been dominating the show for the Philadelphia Flyers are Daniel Briere up to this point include (14 Points), Mike Richards (13 Points), and R.J. Umberger (12 Points). Montreal has some powerful forces at work like Alexei Kovalev (11 Points), Tomas Plekanec (9 Points), and Saku Koivu (9 Points), but still came up short despite their efforts. With the exception of a few glimpses of hope for the Montreal Canadiens, for the most part, Philadelphia Flyers dominated to win the series 4-1. They will go onto play the Pittsburgh Penguins in Round 3.
DETROIT RED WINGS VS COLORADO AVALANCHE
While not as classic as the Rangers Vs Penguins matchup, this rivalry between the Colorado Avalanche and the Detroit Red Wings became an epic one in the late 90's. However, once again, what a major disappointment. While Detroit Red Wings fans I'm sure were loving the domination, Colorado Avalanche fans had to be absolutely devistated as their Avs got absolutely crushed. No one could have foreseen such a romping by the Detroit Red Wings. Jose Theodore had a disappointing series. We found out after the first game that Jose Theodore had the flew. I guess he never got over it. The Colorado Avalanche also were missing some important names like Peter Forsberg and Paul Stastny due to injuries. The huge story for the Detroit Red Wings is the "Mule" Johan Franzen. Johan Franzen now leads the Detroit Red Wings in points in the playoffs thus far with 15 points. Franzen set the NHL Playoff record for the most goals in a four game playoff series with 9 goals. It's hard not to name every player on the Detroit Redwing roster, but we cannot forget the performance of the awesome duo Henrik Zetterberg (14 Points) and Pavel Datsyuk (13 Points). And no one will forget Henrik Zetterberg's awesome turnaround backhand goal. You will notice it is the only play I decided to show more than once in the video. I made sure to dedicate 3 angles to it! Detroit Red Wings beat the Colorado Avalanche 4-0 in the series and will now go on to play the Dallas Stars in Round 3.
DALLAS STARS VS SAN JOSE SHARKS
San Jose Sharks came into this series with a full head of steam, however so did the Dallas Stars. When it came down to it the Dallas Stars were the ones to dominate. With the Anaheim Ducks out the San Jose sharks were the California team to emerge as a dominance presence... until the second round started. The Dallas Stars were ready to go from the onset of the series. Mike Ribeiro (14 Points), Brenden Morrow (12 Points), Brad Richards (11 Points), and Mike Modano (10 Points) all have been playing awesome for the Stars. Some of the big names for San Jose sharks, however, like Joe Thornton Jonathon Chechoo, and Brendan Marleau, were not able to get the job done. Don't get me wrong, Marleau played well with two shorthanded goals and so did Joe Thornton (10 Points) and Jonathan Cheechoo (8 Points). It just wasn't enough. The big story here was the epic performances both goalies Evgeni Nabokov for the San Jose Sharks and Marty Turco for the Dallas Stars. The final game came down to a 7 period matchup where both goalies were huge. In the end the Dallas Stars came out with the overtime victory and the series win 4-1. They will go onto play the Detroit Red Wings in Round 3.
