Adapted from his epic, moody biography of London, Peter Ackroyd explains how the city grew. From the fashionable but bawdy Covent Garden with its theatres, to the slums of the East End, there has always been a tug of war between rich and poor. Featuring Toby Stephens as Casanova. Film: 2004

  • Greatness, avenues, endless traffic. I lived it for 16 years, you can take what you like, and miss what you choose. You can have different lives in different places. Endless.

  • "Often, they seize hold of you in such a fashion of which I can give you the best notion by the fact that I say nothing about it!"

  • *s* I'm a cockney and there's only one "end" in London - the east end. the west end is [or was] always "the other end" and one always went "up" there - going up the other end for a show, or a meal, whatever. I presume the "up" referred to social rather than topographical climbing!

  • Truly the greatest city on Earth.

  • Is Casanova being played by Toby Stephens?
