C.S. Lewis (in one of his novels) presents the picture of an unfallen world. One of the creatures in this world is the "singing beast"--his voice (says Lewis) is to the cello what birdsong (in our world) is to the flute. Listening to the song of this "singing beast", one is reminded of "eternal sorrows eternally consoled." Like this slow movement of Bach, maybe.

@MrMe1955 Just maybe, but I'm pretty sure Mehta and the NY Phil were quite good as well ;)

Stern's 60th Birthday concert - I was there, this movement was the high point of the concert, of course this movement is among the greatest achievements of man - not say that the Vivaldi for three fiddles adding Zukerman was not fun in the concert, but just not as profound as the Bach.

My favorite movement of this piece! :)

A magnificent performance of this heavenly Bach-movement!

maybe, just maybe it might have been better if they had been playing with von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic. Just maybe!
