Plyometrics, also known as "jump training", is a class of elite level athletic movement patterns dependent on first stretching a particular muscle group, then calling on the stretched muscles to contract. This generates elastic recoil, a spring-like mechanism in the muscles fibers recruited for movement which produces peak power production. Plyometrics builds stronger running strides, higher jumps and enhanced muscular toning. Many professional athletes and Olympians in virtually all sports are subjected to plyos by their trainers and attribute their strength and power to this age-old practice.
