On my third day in the Bagerhat disaster area caused by Cyclone Sidr, I teamed up with Nick Downie from Save the Children. We went to a remote region that could only be reached by boat. I brought some blankets (which I bought with my own money) to give away to the poorest of the poor. In addition, we also collected water samples from various areas to see if water filters could be attached to provide clean water for the locals.

This video is not recommended for young children.

If you want to make a donation to the great work that Save the Children is doing after Cyclone Sidr, please check out (link to donate is at bottom of that page):

  • partly this poverty is because the bangladeshi politicians are a bunch of selfish tools who stole from the government for their own gains and not to help these poor people.

  • Haha - I swear, if every Bangladeshi that complained about government corruption gave a dime to the poor - there would be no poverty in Bangladesh.

Sure, Bangladesh has a lot of places it can improve in terms of fighting corruption, but blaming the gov't for poverty is just a scapegoat.

  • @UnculturedProject

A scapegoat eh? Do you think simply handing money to the poor will reduce poverty? We've tried that in africa endlessly. You change the political situation you also change the economic one. With good governance you see more investment more opportunities. But in bangladesh its become a culture of thievery. Handing money to the poor won't change anything if the political climate is not sound.

  • @killerbunny132 Ahh yes. I should believe you instead of my lying eyes. Doesn't make a difference? Why not get off the computer and tell that the people that's actually benefitted. You can start with the 80 families that got disaster relief, or a community that got clean water, or a student that was able to graduate because his school was rebuilt, or the 10,000 kids who have medical health workers in over 96 villages now.

Not change anything, eh? Tell it to those whose lives have been changed.

  • This is so inspirational, and you have given me a very good idea on how I will be going about my goals in another part of the world. The middle east.

I thank you, Shawn, from the bottom of my heart!

  • @unculturedproject I agree with you, totally!

It's the easy way for people to say; "I'm sorry, I don't really care to help... I don't believe in their system"

  • I only just recently learned about these videos, but I'm fascinated by your project and hope for the best. Keep the videos coming; I'm hoping to spread the word about these with my classmates.
