I agree with your views, its amazing how attractive how asians people have this fascination with "fair skin".

Hi sunny, I don't think the obsession to be white is Indian alone. Pretty much all asian especially colonized "non white" countries have this problem...be it Thailand or malaysia or nepal. Indians go "mild" compared to the extent that some of my friends have gone to..surgery and peels and everyday masks. Its not normal but it's their normal.
This obsession with whiteness is diluting in Indian youth but growing more in the other asian counties. It's sad and it might take decades to see any change

so true :(

If you think that Indians shouldn't change their God given gift of dark skin to have lighter skin then western people shouldn't be changing their God given gift of pale skin to have tan? Either way they both use cosmetics ,which may be harmful to skin, to change.
-
But on the other hand I don't think tanning is any more intelligent than artifically lightening the skin.

People often want what they can't have.

@ruruross But atleast in western countries, colorism is not as blatantly accepted and encouraged as it is in Asia(including South Asia, East Asia, Southeast Asia, and the middle east). Lighter skin is widely seen as being more beautiful and appealing in all these regions of Asia. It's a legacy of Colonialism for sure.

@myliferomanticcomedy Even to this day(in the year 2012), there still are advertisements in magazines and newspapers looking for a FAIR SKINNED bride or a FAIR SKINNED groom. Bollywood stars(male as well female) peddle skin lightening products but justify it by saying "it's not a skin lightening product. it's for evening you skin tone". BULLSHIT. lol. I'm Indian myself. It's sickening. We have to do better as a people! Of course, not all Indians think like that but MOST do.
-
@myliferomanticcomedy trust me, obsession with lighter skin is still BIG in India...when they cast actresses in the good innocent girl role, they choose the lighter skinned actress while the darker skin actresses play the role of the sexy temptress. A B list bollywood actress brought this topic up about how she constantly struggles to get meatier roles because she's not as light as KATRINA OR KAREENA. skin lightening products is a thriving billion $ business in india

We all want what we don't have.
If someone uses tanning it's okay but if someone use's fair and lovely it's bad. Why?

This just proves my idea that the negative aspects of HUMAN CULTURE is not East vs West -Racism -Pornography -Homosexuality -Greed and Corruption -Lack of family values and Oppressive family values -Backward Superstitions and stupid rituals and ceremonies -Pedosexuality All these things exist in both the East and the West To Easterners that claim "Western Culture" is "bad", look in the mirror. The East does it just as much, the only difference is that it's taboo and done in secret Hypocrites!

i agree with that some Indian people consider u more beautiful if u have lighter skin which is ridiculous, but i disagree with u about the cream b/c if there can be creams and lotions to to make u skin more tan then why cant there be creams and lotions to have more of fairer skin.
And the sad thing is that many british asians also believe that the fairer you are the prettier you are

@shazxxxxxxx16786 I know lady, I dislike it when some elders speak about potential marriage arrangements and one of the first questions they ask beside occupation, family background etc is "are they dark?" I'm like does it matter.... a marriage does not work or break down due to either parties skin color, nor is it based on skin coloring

@sunnylovesit1 seriously girl i couldnt agree more on the skin tone discrimination in india. when I went to India i felt the same, and i was quite disgusted by it. I heared some stories about girls getting bullied by boys or something.... Its a shame coz tanned skin is a blessing and yeah british indian would understand what i mean :)

i feel the same way... when i was in HS i dated a paki guy.. his mum met me randomly one day and the only thing she had to say was that i was too dark.. it tore me apart, i started using fair and lovely, saffron treatments, and anything i could get my hands on to lighten my skin. eventually i got wise and that whole "light skin is beautiful" thing just SICKENS me

@aestheticglory nice to hear you don't like the idea of fairer skin being somewhat superior to darker skin. I'm surprised his mum wasn't like (que Bollywood sound effects) what my son is dating... (thats just a typical cultural taboo). Anyway don't ever let another's negative thoughts and comments affect you I know its easier said than done but, really people who use their mouth to be hurtful towards others are not worth dwelling over. :)
