The success of breast conservations depends on achieving clear margins, meaning that no cancer remains at the periphery of the excised tumor. If the margins contain cancer cells a second operation is needed. New technology helps doctors to assess the these margins quickly.
Dr. Freya Schnabel discusses a clinical trial of Margin Probe, a device used in the operating room which examines the edge of the specimen with radiofrequency spectroscopy to determine immediately whether a re-excision is necessary so that it can be accomplished at the same time.
