  • Excellent demonstration, thank you for taking the time to make it. Using a lot of water and then the iron has made veneering much easier. Frequently I'm experiencing separation about 5mm from the edges of the substrate, any ideas?

  • @SeattleFineWoodwork Do you mean the veneer is lifting at the edges? or the veneer has shrunk over night.

1 try using thicker glue and a lighter touch with the veneer hammer. Loads of water is not always needed. too much can cause problems.

2 Overhang the veneer and trim it next day.

Practice and adapt the technique to suit yourself.

  • 3.14 massive fart!

  • Thanks for the reply. I will try gluing newspaper over the joint. Thanks again for the hide glue videos. They solved a number of problems I was having trying to hammer veneer.

  • @YanktonBen Hi Ben. Humidity, glue thickness, room temprature can all effect veneering.

If the veneer is drying before the glue grabs gaps can open. thicker glue can help.

I prefer not to veneeron hot humid days. Try scotching a strip of newspaper over a join.

  • Thank You so much for the videos. I am having problems with my veneer joints opening up slightly after everything is dry (1/64" to maybe a 1/32"). Any suggestions on how to keep the joints tight. Thank you again for the wonderful videos.

  • Mdf bows from the veneer pulling it. veneer the other side to cancel it out.

  • is it the veneer that will bow, or the mdf will bow from the veneer pulling??

  • Thanks Buz, that was the first video really showing how to deal with veneers.

I still have to optimise my way to bring the valued wood to the plywood butr your video helped me to make progress.

    Again! thank you very much!

  • You make this look so easy ... I've been trying to use Ash veneer with little success where jointing two veneers is concerned. does this method leave a good join or do they pull apart?

  • @BazCabinetMaker

Thanks for the reply. After glueing up several more panels it became apparent that a couple of things caused the lifting at the edges.

    - Not enough water/steam used to soften the veneer

-More glue applied to the surface

-Too much pressure on the hammer.

Very nice technique, By using hide glue I was able to veneer 15 panels faster than using vacuum bags.
