Contrary to popular belief in the era before environmental protection laws in many places private citizens were able to sue polluting industries for damage to the value of their property.
Back in the 1870's to the 1910's my family used to get a monthly check from a Pennsylvania coke producer as compensation for polluting my great great great grandfathers cornfields.

@virginiatechfanx Actually I am from the US Ford did not invent mass production It was the French. He copied it but he was smart by doing everything in house, steel the main component and buying land with timber. What many people do not realise is that he failed three times. Cadillac ended up picking up where Ford had failed.

HAHAHA, I love the irony in Clarkson's ancestors were unenvironmentally friendly.
The guy is an absolute legend, such a good programme.
