Kentucky Fairgrounds Motor Speedway

Super 8 movie footage taken in the early 70s at The Kentucky Fairgrounds Motor Speedway. This was preseason testing and public viewing of cars for the new season of racing. Therefore figure 8 cars only ran on the oval. The only car I can identify is the 41 car. It is Andy Vertrees. If you know what year this was or any other driver names please add comment.

I was a neighborhood kid of his mechanic Larry Foster. Don't think Andy would remember my name but he might remember the kid with the white 55 Chevy. He lived in Valley Station, Kentucky when he raced at the fairgrounds. He build Louisville Speedway, Kentucky Speedway, and the Lake Erie Speedway. He is Kentucky Speedway's Director of Operations at this time. Don't know where he was born. Roger

My Dad and uncle raced at the old fairgrounds speedway back in the 60s and 70s. Also my Mother-in-law work in the office for Mr. Hartloff. My uncle was pretty will known at the time, his name was W. S. Brewer. He had a really bad wreck while racing one night and was hurt pretty bad. He gave up racing after that. I can remember going to his house right after the wreck and he was black and blue and his head was swelled up. He had to keep an ice pack on it for some time. He lives still.

#94 Carl Elwanger was our next door neighbor. Even helped in the pits on occasion. If this is preseason practice in "74", I was stationed at Ft Campbell, ky getting to have our first child and get out if the Army. Give some more.

That is some great stuff. I would LOVE to see any video of the old Fairgrounds particularly the "late models". I spent many Friday nights watching F8's and Saturdays watching late models. That AMC of Bill Clemons is a rare piece of history.

Wow cool piece,I was just a young kid back then but I remember my dad use to take me to the fairgrounds I was like 678 years old then,I travel up and down 65 all day driving a dump truck and see the horse barns and wish it was still a race track...oh well still brings back memories I wont ever forget.
