On 16 December 1971, General Jagjit Singh Arora of India accepted surrender by General Niazi of Pakistan along with 93,000 Pakistani forces after 1300 casualties from the Pakistani side,Niazi signed the instrument of surrender. This was the largest number of POWs since World War II. Pakistan lost 140,000 sq kms of area. Later Niazi blamed Yahya Khan and Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto for the surrender.
