I do not own this video. It belongs to nhl.com. Here is a clip regarding the Washington Capitals vs Pittsburgh Penguins game. Alexander theGr8 receives his suspension from none other than, Brendan Shanahan, for his illegal hit on Zbynek Michalek. January 23, 2012. MrNHLFanatic
The headshot called for the suspension not the charging. Which I could agree with. Had Ovechkin simply hit the shoulder I don't believe it would result in a suspension.

what if the recieving player gets a concussion and never gets back to the game of hockey just because of that hit?
Is that a part of the game also?
Stupid.
Shanahan and co are doing a great job.

could all you crybabies start watching tennis? We don't need pussies watching hockey. The real players will take a dirty hit and get him back the next time they play them. No suspensions for a hit that wasn't even a penalty in the first place and the guy was never injured. This is turning into some major bullshit. Let's go back in time to where these were big hits and everyone wasn't so uptight. Fuck you shanahan

You are not allowed to launch yourself into a player. This rule has been in effect ever since I can remember. Now, when you launch yourself into someone and hit their head, there's gonna be some kind of consequence. I think Ovechkin got off light because he's a habitual offender. Should have been 5 games at least. He does this every game. I have to think, if this wasn't on national TV, it wouldn't have even been reviewed.

@thenewnhlsux It's pretty obvious that it was going to be a body check until Ovechikin intentionally launches himself off his feet and gets his shoulders almost OVER Michalek's head. I've watched hockey for two decades. The rules have changed and they clearly state that you are not allowed to leave your feet to deliver a check. Ovechkin should know better. He was moving fast enough to deliver a hard and effective hit without leaving his feet. Instead, he tried to blow Michalek up.

@khehl68 Doesn't matter if there was an injury or not, a hit is a hit. This was a bad hit.
