Xuan paper is very thin and fragile, paintings or calligraphy done on it need to be supported or mounted with thicker paper...Chinese calligraphy and painting paper that is originally from Xuan County is called Xuan paper or Shuan paper. Since the Europeans and Japanese were trying to steal the trade secrets in the 19th and early 20th centuries, they were misinformed it was made of rice. This paper has no ingredient of rice, thus "rice paper" is a misnomer which is never used in China.
