Weaver Ds Fine Foods - 1016 E. Broad Street

Weaver Ds Fine Foods serves some of the best soul food in all of Athens. The owner and operator, Dexter Weaver, runs his restaurant by the slogan automatic for the people. It is this very same slogan that R.E.M. chose for the title of their 1992 album. The restaurant occupies a 1950s commercial building with a false front parapet. While the restaurant itself is not a music venue, it has served many of Athens most famous and has been a source of inspiration. The book Automatic, Yall compiles memoirs and recipes from Weaver Ds and is a must read for any true Athenian. The restaurant is also the anchor of the Pottery Town neighborhood the building originally served the mill village where the workers at a local pottery factory worked. Sadly, the building is now in danger from new development as downtown is becoming a desirable place to live.

Dexter is my hero! It was awesome to see him on the Travel Channel show "Taste of America" a few months ago. He used to buy meat from us at the UGA Meat Lab.
