I recently heard interview with Bettye over NPR. I learned that she both wrote and originally recorded this song. She got little air time because the song was thought to be too sexual and immodest. She believes this to be a prime example of racial bias within the music industry, for when Bobbie Gentry recorded her song, it became a minor hit. Thanks to Ms. Gentry for popularizing an otherwise obscure and little-known tune, but with most gratitude going to the original artist, Ms. Lavette.
