Ian Henchy Modern Drummer Undiscovered Drummer 2008 Solo

Ian Henchy's two minute drum solo for Modern Drummer's 2008 "Undiscovered Drummer" contest in the "18 or younger" category.




100 Word Biography:

Ian Henchy has been playing drums for four years. He is currently a full-time student at Tufts University, and studies drumset privately with both Mike Mangini (in Boston) and Martin Vasquez (on Cape Cod). During his senior year in high school, Ian successfully auditioned for the "All-Cape Music Festival" Band, which performed four orchestral pieces in front of an audience of over a thousand people. He has also played in several musical theater productions, including Cabaret, Seussical the Musical, Little Shop of Horrors, and My Fair Lady. Ian has learned several drumming styles, and is constantly learning and improving.

WARNING, NERDY MUSICIAN TALK FOLLOWS! NONESSENTIAL READING:

I based the solo around one rhythmic phrase (1 + 2e+ 3) and tried to think of how many different ways I could orchestrate it. I ended up playing in 4/4, 7/8, a 4/4 + 7/8 compound (15/8), a 12/8 half-time shuffle (with linear elements I was proud of :-P), and 12/8 with a double bass/hi-hat ostinato. There's a lot going on here and it probably just sounds like a lot of notes if you aren't a drummer. Haha.
