Pei Zhang, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University, is working on a mobile-sensor network that could send swarms of tiny helicopters into a building. The robotic helicopters are equipped with radios, gyroscopes, and compasses, so they can sense each other and objects around them. While the project is still in the very early stages of research and development, Zhang hopes one day firefighters could use the robotic helicopters for search and rescue.

  • @ahnraphel yeah, pretty sure the applications for this are more for military and police than firefighters, but it makes them seem more positive, eh?

(hmm and in addition to heat issues, aren't radio signals compromised by heavy smoke and affected by the ionization produced by combustion?)

  • Have you tried flying them in 1600+ degree fully involved rooms yet? They're probably going to melt.
