Dune Buggy Daredevils (1974)

Here's a fun movie I made 35 years ago on the South side of Orlando, Florida. My buddy Jesse owned a dune buggy which is basically a Volkswagen chassis with a custom fiberglass shell. In areas like Florida, they are fun to drive around on the beach or other sandy areas as they are without a roof, open and give you a great sense of speed & freedom.
With the brand new Kodak Ektasound Super8 system at the time, it seemed like a great idea to combine the two hobbies and make a movie about the sport. I used a Eumig sound projector which was able to mix & record audio, so I tried to blend the two...not always with the greatest of results. But it was all new back then and I learned a lot from my early sound experiments. I also learned to hang on while filming standing up in a dune buggy!

Where did you filmed that? Was it an empty lot that now belongs to Universal Orlando or where the Orange County Convention Center sits now?

Could be. I don't remember exactly but I'll ask my buddy Jesse. (I seem to remember it being West of Orlando, but I said South in the film.)

I got in touch with my buddy Jesse and he says the location for the shoot was S. of Old Winter Garden Rd. Bet. Hiawassee and S. Apopka Vineland Rd. He thinks this would make the location a dirt area off Edgewood Boys Ranch Rd..
