What a brilliant thing to learn after all these years - that the photos were ad hoc as it were, and not staged! The girl with white hair seemed the epitome of glamour to me and she made the intro for me. Thank you, clydefans! Also Trund27 - yes we were lucky as teenagers the CBC had this unit dedicated to promoting film culture. You could only learn this stuff by TV but Ben Gordon gave it context and background. This is all I really miss from the '80s (and youth) and Soft Cell and Depech Mode...

@Trund27 I think CBC Late Night, for its era, functioned somewhat like Turner Classic Movies does now - as a platform largely for older, black and white motion pictures that were perhaps not common place even when your basic rotation of television channels were still playing movies on a regular basis. It was both fantastic and reliable while it lasted.

@Attomind ABSOLUTELY, 100% agree. This show is where I (a girl from Northern BC) could actually see movies that weren't available at the local video store. It was a dream come true for movie geeks like me! Great comments!

I was there at Club Voodoo (in Toronto) the night they shot some of the images for this movie opener. My best friend at the time(with the big plume of white hair) shows up for three frames right after the pinball machine segment here. After all these years I'm surprised to see how well the classic movie images manage to mix with the early eighties new-wave styles. A funny mix I suppose...but then, the early eighties was a period with a lot of retro styling to it anyway.

Hi John, Yes, being able to view it more slowly and analytically I'm amazed how full of great, mixed-era images the intro is. Like you it really glamourised cinema for me. I grew up in Winnipeg which wasn't exactly a nightlife hot spot at the time, and the intro for me was a different, classy and sophisticated world of possibility. I live in London now which really does have a nightlife but nothing here has quite the effect CBC Latenight left me with when it was new to me. Lost youth!

@Attomind Well said. It's amazing and I'm actually quite surprised how much of an impact this short CBC Latenight intro had on me. I was a teenager at the time myself and I recall it sparked my imagination and made me fascinated with downtown life and culture after dark. Enough so that here i am searching for this clip on youtube some 25 yrs later.

I myself remember this intro from 1984, although it may predate it by a year. CBC LATENIGHT was a brilliant CBC ploy to introduce subtly marketed film culture education by making the intro very cool and party-club in tone. It was responsible for a whole generation of teenagers like me discovering cinema as an art form. My thanks and gratitude to them and Ben Gordon forever!
