POLITICAL AFTERMATH OF THE WAR (is it over or just beginning?)

NATO has hailed Russia's decision to halt its military operation in South Ossetia as good news. But Jaap de Hoop Scheffer says Georgia's actions in South Ossetia will not affect its chances of joining the military alliance. However, the U.S. has blocked an emergency NATO-Russia Council meeting on the situation in South Ossetia.

I myself believe the Georgians are better off as province of Russia. The ideal arrangement is like the Basques in Spain- autonomy. At least, when they are part of Russia, they are identified as Russians when they visit Europe & that would elicit respect. Who would respect them if they identify themselves as Georgians when they visit Paris?
