my parents has one in their unit,at first i hated it due to the annoying zap sounds since the furnace is located in the hallway(my bedroom is the closest to it) and that thing keeps me awake and i know my parents don't let me turn the switch off but i turn it off anyways so i can have some quiet,now i live on my own and my unit does not have it...HA!

Also be careful with the cells the cell plates are very sharp

I used to build these units in the plant where i worked until the factory went out of business. Sometimes the plates are making contact witheach other and will need adjusted apart or the wires may be contacting the plates on the cell. Either way the cells hold a charge even ater they are taken out and should be discharged It is not enough to kill you but certainly give you a jolt I've had this happen to me several times Just use a screwdriver from the contact to the cabinet to discharge
