Constantino Kavafis: The God Abandons Antony. Kavafis the greatest poet, Cohen the greatest singer.

Oh come on! I was just making a joke, concerning the similarity of the names! Alexandria (in the poem) - Alexandra in the song! That is all.

Thank you for uploading! Please correct as soon as you can: It is "ALEXANDRIA", the capital city of the Hellenistic Egypt, not "ALEXANDRA", a female name.

I find this a very good interpretation of the song, Matthew. I felt the same, but couldn't have put it into words like you did. Thank you.

This is a good recording, however, search for the Sharon Robinson version from Amsterdam. That is a really powerful version. Constantine Cavafy wrote a poem about Antony (and Cleopatra) under siege in Alexandria His patron (or protector) Bacchus leaves the city in an invisible procession through the streets, and, basically abandons Antony to his fate (suicide, by falling on his sword).

And by "that" honor, not "the" honor--okay, gree47, you need to redo this. Look up a set of liner notes or just listen more carefully. Damn.
