A funky song from the album Try! by John Mayer. Notice the use of the left thumb for fretting the sixth string. I play this with alternate picking, so the timing is easier. Of course the string-skipping is tricky. Use you ears.

  • Hello.. I have to know, Where can i get those strap buttons?? John Mayer uses them but i cant find them anywhere.. Thank you!! Great Playing by the way!!

  • @sngncwby those are the rubber rings found on Grolsch beer bottles. Good things come from Holland ;)

  • What is the first chord that you are playing? I can't quite make it out, but it looks something like:

    044320

Except it doesn't sound quite right. Any help would be appreciated, your video has been really useful so far =)

  • the first chords:

thumb on 6th string, 5th fret

then slide on 4th string from 4th to 5th fret and on 3rd string from 5th to 6th fret. Does this help?

  • Sorry, I wasn't very clear. I meant the chord at 0:12 and 0:40.

    Thanks

  • At 0:12 and 0:40 I play an F#m chord: 244222. I fret the 6th string with my thumb. Good luck!

  • @reinoutv28 Haha klopt.. welke nederlandse gitarist heeft deze nou tegenwoordig nog niet :P

  • @polyfractal I'm pretty sure Mayer is playing 9ths from what I believe I've seen on live vids. If you aren't familiar with them, look up any funk lesson on youtube. 9ths and 7ths are the main chords ever in funk and blues.

  • The notes and chords are correct, but the strumming pattern isn't quite right.

  • its not accurate

  • did u need sheet music for that?

  • @chapie1987 hearing it again, you might be doing it already but I can't really tell since you're playing it on a clean channel.

  • Nice! good job!

However I dont think you're suppose to pick the notes separately, just a hard strum while muting all the rest of the strings.

Check out the dvd/blu-ray Where the Light Is, the acoustic bit, just before the performance. You'll clearly see and hear him muting all the other strings while strumming hard. At least that's what I do, and it sounds spot on.

    groetjes! ;)

  • I know, good things come from holland, i was made there and i still live there! lol
