Kissing a cuttlefish (Sepia apama) 親吻烏賊媽媽(墨魚)

I was diving off Mabul Island in Sabah, Malaysia and met 5 or 6 large cuttlefish. They were not shy and did not flee. So I gently pet some and even kissed one beauty gently on her back.

Later I learned that these cuttlefish were really guarding their eggs nearby. That's why they did not want to leave even though they might have been scared about my presence. I would not have touched such loving mothers had I known that. They have certainly earned my full respect.

It was a wonderful feeling full of love when violence is absent from our world.

If you watch this video carefully, you will notice that I wear yellow fins. A girl diving in my group wears blue fins. Notice that it was a blue fin that kicked this poor cuttlefish mom who was patiently tending her nest (I only realized that after I surfaced). This was the only reason why she put up with our disturbance and did not flee. Had I known that at the time, I would not have touched nor kissed her.

Such amazing creatures. He's quite the confident cuttlefish sitting next to someone much larger.
