Dalle ceneri di ciò che è rimasto sorgerà un nuovo Paese, Panem, diviso in dodici distretti. Ogni anno, mediante una lotteria, due giovani ragazzi di ogni distretto sono scelti per partecipare a dei giochi che prendono il nome di Hunger Games. Lo scopo è quello di eliminarsi a vicenda, con la restante popolazione costretta ad assistere a tutto quanto attraverso i loro teleschermi.
