30.04 - 03.05.2008: Kathrin had planned a four day trip to a very beautiful and ancient podocarp forest in the central eastern part of the North Island, near Lake Waikaremoana. The Whirinaki Forest (http://www.whirinakirainforest.info/) was close to becoming a victim of milling, but was preserved and now displays New Zealand as it must have been when the first settlers came.
We spent one night in an accommodation close to the trail head before to get our gear sorted. Then we started our round trip and spent two nights in the Central Whirinaki and the Mangamate hut. The third day was a great challenge because of the track being so difficult to find with all the trees having blown over some months before and all the DOC markers gone and Toetoe bushes claiming back the territory.
This trip was such a great experience for every one of us. No phone, no electricity, just nature, solitude and a great company.
really great. I enjoy the video so much.
