The irish rover is a breed of dog developed in Ireland in the 1800's. Where as most retrievers were bred to fetch ducks, the rover was bred to fetch bottles of whiskey and beer. One of the most famous dogs of the era was Spike. After being sent for a bottle, he returned with the requested whiskey, an additional case of beer, and three hookers. The dog was smoking a cigarette when he showed up.
