I've almost been killed on that road twice, once from a rockslide, another time because of an oncoming truck taking the inside of one of those hairpins, which they have no choice but to do, just don't be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Not to mention crazy people passing on double yellow all the time. I've had friends who died on that road over the years. It must be the most dangerous road in America. I prefer the alternate route, even without a closing. Take an extra hour and LIVE.
