as a relatively new student of aikido, i understand firsthand some of the concerns about aikido's apparent 'realism'.

i thought i might give my 2 cents worth about why aikido sometimes look fake. note: these are my personal views and are not necessarily endorsed by my dojo or other aikidoka in general.

i was going to do a vlog on 'ki' but chickened out at the thought of talking about such a controversial issue. haha. one day perhaps. ;)

p.s. ooh, i forgot to add that some techniques hurt like f***, so that's why people go down very quickly and willingly as well. :P

addendum: whilst i've been extremely tempted to remove/ban some of the comments here due to intentional flaming, trolling, foul language, personal attacks, tangential topics and/or sheer stupidity, i've decided that censorship is not my cup of tea and that it might be better to leave it to the readers to judge the merits of a comment or lack thereof.

i may occasianlly attempt to lead the aforementioned cluster of commenters to a more appopriate forum to relieve their grievances, but would typically just ignore them.

on the other hand, whilst i am appreciative of supportive comments, i would normally only reply to substantial and poignant comments/criticisms which i feel may further the discussion of the said topic in a productive manner.

  • I have to ask is there an adapted aikido for use in tournaments or regular up to date situations? Basically I just mean is there a version u are aware of that could be used in mma or does a person have to do a kind of hybrid martial art?

  • @Lyunatis you can find different styles/schools/teachers ranging from hard to soft, from technical to intuitive, from traditional to modern. generally speaking, mainstream aikido discourages/prohibits competitions as it is contrary to its philosophy, although one fairly large style called "Shodokan Aikido" or Tomiki Aikido has competitions.

  • @boghdan2000 Which style of Aikido are you talking about? Is it Aikikai or Yoshinkan. Because Aikikai has no structure while Yoshinkan Aikido has six basic movements; on the contrary, in Yoshinkan, shi'te has to move with uke as those throwing techniques can be dangerous if uke doesn't move with shi'te.

  • @boghdan2000 aikido and karate and kung fu practitioners are like little bitches when they come on the matt. The only few who gave me a challenge were Judo players. respect on judo and sooto!

  • Aikido is fake PERIOD. I am BJJ instructor I only practice BJJ for 6 years now and I have Aikido students who I tap easy...a student of mine practice bjj for only 2 years and he taps all the aikido guys who by the way some of them practice aikido for 7-8-9 years

  • @steve3047 Sorry I couldn't reply earlier my eye was swollen shut from sparring last week couldn't stand any direct light. No I haven't tried aikido but they train in the same dojo and I see them train but I have sparred with them and I'm just sorry they did not convince me of it's effectiveness. I originally replied to your comment after u said that it wasn't allowed in MMA which is not true, why hasn't anyone stepped up yet every other discipline has, why not aikido ?

  • @steve3047 Yeah we are trying to prove something, what works in real life situations and what doesn't. It's like that video with the guy knocking out people without touching them I think he deserved getting punched in the face for ripping all those students off.

And we're not ripping other original martial arts off, martial arts has evolved in the past 15 years more than the last 700. You evolve with it and test yourself not fool yourself by training for 2 hours without breaking a sweat.

  • @steve3047 it is allowed in MMA so don't make it sound like a super dangerous martial art that not even MMA would allow it, you can try sparring with an MMA fighter like I sparred with Aikido practitioners see how far it'll get you.

and there are hundreds of videos of Karate, Kung Fu, Jiu Jitsu, boxing Muay Thai, you name it being used in real life situations and fights, not just exhibitions and movies

  • Provide proof of aikido techniques effectively being used in a real self defense situation or even in a mixed martial arts match. You can't.

  • @comradebashu if you don't flip over like they show, you're joint will be broken. "simply resisting" doesn't work if you're against an experienced aikido guy. they'll attack you elsewhere while you're distracting with overpowering his kotegaeshi.
