  • Have you been to China.True, the US and other industrialized nations went through a period of development marked by widespread pollution, but not on the scale of Chinese pollution today. I have been all through China, and some places will never be cleaned up. The difference also is that China has technological means that the US didn't have during development. China has the largest foreign exchange reserves, which can be used in cleaning up and developing sustainably. They should buy US, EU tech.

  • China is another ENRON soon to be Announced ------

Sorry dude, you can't afford this. Among other things, Zhongguo is already in the throes of a water crisis. So much water is wasted and hideously polluted the cities are threatened. You don't get rich that way.

Western countries cleaned up their act because their people had real power over elected officials. As was revealed by the fall of the Soviet Union--communism is bad for the environment. Corrupt officialdom and big business can do as they please.

  • @menorka1

    Shanghai is cleaner.

  • All developed countries have gone through this and all developing countries are going through this. The government system has nothing to do with it; there are already plenty of environmental protection laws in China and China is less polluted then India.

The fact that there is cleaner technology is irrelevant because clean technology is expensive and costs money that can be better spent in new infrastructure and hiring more people. Modernizing the country and ending poverty must come 1st.

  • poor guy

  • If I were the guy wading in that water, I'd worry about growing an extra set of eyes or limbs the next morning.

I've been in China for the better part of a year and I've *never* seen anything resembling natural blue water. It's a shame.

  • i will never go to china !!!

  • so what? just clean the algae and it's okay? why not stop polluting? Then no algae.

  • Burger you are perfectly right. USA people had the ability to make laws restricting and punishing corporations. Chinese people don't have democracy so they can not change the laws. We were able to force business to clean up or go out of business. China has the technology to clean up but not the will or the legal tools. So without the legal tools they will never clean up the envirement. The people have no way to fight back. Maybe throw rocks? Cause that's all they really have.
