Whitman's poem celebrating America's diverse voices read by the Watchung Hills Regional High School English Department.

I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear,
Those of mechanics, each one singing his as it should be blithe and strong,
The carpenter singing his as he measures his plank or beam,
The mason singing his as he makes ready for work, or leaves off work,
The boatman singing what belongs to him in his boat, the deckhand singing on the steamboat deck,
The shoemaker singing as he sits on his bench, the hatter singing as he stands,
The wood-cutter's song, the ploughboy's on his way in the morning, or at noon intermission or at sundown,
The delicious singing of the mother, or of the young wife at work, or of the girl sewing or washing,
Each singing what belongs to him or her and to none else,
The day what belongs to the day -- at night the party of young fellows, robust, friendly,
Singing with open mouths their strong melodious songs.

I liked Mr.Horowitz's reading as well. His voice was loud and strong and I thought he put the most emotion into it. Every detail of the poem stuck out.

  • Vincent Chang Period 8:

i liked Mr Horowitz's reading the best since he expressed more emotion in his words. The places he emphasized on also, in my opinion, flowed smoothly with the entire sentence. Mr Porter didn't do bad either, i liked how he emphasized himself by closing up on the cam.

  • Steven Weidlich Period 8:

Mr. Horowitz was the best in my opinion. He read the poem clear and with passion. In his last reading, I could tell he cared about the poem and wanted to read the poem.

  • Maggie Kollmar, Pd 8:

Personally, I felt Mr. Porter and Mrs. Mammen did really well reading the Whitman poem. Mr. Porter made it more of a comfortable atmosphere because he was closer to the screen then the other teachers. I felt Mrs. Mammen's differentaited vocals sounded clear and dramatic.

  • John Herrmann, Pd. 8:

I think that Mr. Ross did the best because he had pauses and read the poem very somoothly. He took it a bit slower than some of the other teachers and that made the poem easier to understand and more natural. I also thought Mr. Porter did it good because he stood next to the camera and he was easily heard.

  • Michael DeJesus, Pd. 8:

Mr. Ross, in my own opinion, delivered the poem the best, due to the way he clearly enunciated each word and read the poem in ordinance with the cadence and rhythm of the lines, the way Whitman intended. His slower pace -- compared to the fast past of some of the other readers -- allows the listener adequate time to listen to the poem and allows for each word within the poem to have an impact. Mr. Horowitz also read the peom very well, with strong enunciation.
