Plastic bottles are pretty thin. How much plastic is in a (much thicker) Britta filter?
-
Sad, but true :( I just calculated that brita needs to sell 130 million filters in order to take away all of the plastic water bottles in the U.S, and counting.
-
Plus it raises more questions, do they count gallon jugs? What about people who use the same bottle over and over, filling it up with fountain water? 39 billion 20 oz bottles is over 6 billion gallons of water. Am I to believe every man, woman, and child (including the homeless) drinks 18 gallons of BOTTLED water a year? What about soda bottles? And how much plastic is in a filter compared to 300 bottles that are easily recycled or reused? I call shenanigans!

I tried to verify this commercial by checking the math (a bit tricky since they say "over" and not an exact number). But they seem to say the average water bottle size is 7.6 inches, while I found it to be 10.09 inches. Which means 39 billion bottles would go around the earth 249 times, or we used 29 billion bottles if it went 190 times, which means they exaggerated their estimates by almost 40%

How many of those 39 billion bottles were recycled?

I'm glad you explained this... Now I understand what they were talking about on collectfreedomnow, com. I watched the video and was a bit curious about it so I looked into it and found this video. Thanks for your help.

@ktybug2008 I never said anything about how much it removes per year...your argument is irrelevant.
-
@plenty0fsweater One Brita filter is only good for 40 gallons of water or 2 months of use - So, you actually use 6 filters a year which means each person can remove 1,800 bottles of water a year. I think you confused 1 filter with one pitcher...

@kerpoperly could i buy the sheet music? or, if you wanna be really awesome, provide a download link? i think that piece is amazing. brita should keep up with mr. may.
I came here just to say...really? Three hundred? That's it? Your sales pitch that is supposed to convince us to buy it is that it can take 300 out of the 39 billion? Do you know how much that is? It's less than 0.000001% of 39 billion.

@plenty0fsweater Thanks for your response. That's a good point but if you multiply that times every person who drinks bottled water it ends up being a lot of plastic. Even 300 bottles is a lot of plastic compared to one filter. Brita is a better alternative in that regard, isn't it?

@kerpoperly what would be a better alternative would be to distill water at your own home, using no plastic bottles or plastic encased filters, and using renewable energy sources it wouldn't cause any pollution either.

@woodchucker23 Agreed, but asking people to make such an extreme change is highly improbable. In the meantime, while we wait for everyone to install bicycle-powered home filtration devices, plastic filters are a better alternative than plastic bottles. When companies, like Brita, catch on that eco-friendly can be profitable it stands a much better chance of becoming mainstream and making a real difference. Thanks for your comment, by the way.

The piano track is an original piece scored for this commercial. The composer's name is Daniel May.
