(youtube won't allow me to embed this video as part of a video score).

This is one of the greatest ever piano solos in pop music, played by a giant of jazz, whose talent burned so brightly yet so briefly on this earth. Kenny Kirkland was a virtuosic pianist and by many accounts a workaholic too - this combination of supreme talent and incredible application made him one of the most highly regarded pianists of the last 50 years. I'm inspired by this solo for many reasons - the highly percussive and syncopated style is so funky, and palatable for pop fans, whilst the harmony is bluesy but Kenny still manages to take it 'out' later on in the solo. His phrasing is also incredible, given the tempo of the track. I really would love to have the facility at the piano that Kenny had! I realise that there are already videos of this solo / transcription on youtube already, but they are either played under tempo, or not transcribed properly, or both. I decided I'd much rather transcribe it myself and learn exactly what's going on. Any mistakes (and there are many!) are mistakes in my playing, not in the transcription I did... the shaking in the video is caused by me hammering the piano so hard that my laptop was moving around despite being rested on top of two very sturdy amps :D No wonder I feel tired now! Anyway - this was the best take in terms of feel - so here you go. I hope you enjoy it!

This video was recorded:
Nord Stage 2 88 - Apogee Duet (direct from amp outputs) - Logic.
