When it comes to fast wide angle lenses there are a few options out there. You can stick with the Canon or Nikon versions that run over $1,000 or you can look into the Sigma and Tamron 17-50 2.8s for much less.

In this case I am reviewing the Sigma 17-50 2.8 OS which runs $669.99 at Allen's Camera. Who is this lens for? This lens is for the new and up and coming photographer with the Canon Rebels or Nikon D3100 D5100 and possibly the D7000. This lens is one of the first two lenses that I see being in a photographers bag. This lens will work hand and hand with a 70-200 giving you full coverage from 17 all the way to 200mm in a 2.8 lens.

  • maybe i'll buy it this summer:) thank you for the vid :P great review!

    but is it weathersealed?

  • Will It work on FX bodies?

I'm thinking about having the Nikon version and from What I know that Crop sensor lenses work on the FX bodies crop mode, Am I right? Have you tried on your FX body?

and What do you recommend getting this or the Tamron 28-75 mm f2.8?

  • The Tamron 16-50 2.8 is cheaper and just as good if not better.

  • I wish I gad a cool Canon chair like you.

  • My 18-105 has less purple fringing then this crap (on a D7000)

  • Nice review but I think it's better to show those pictures without any adjustments in Lightroom so we can see how it looks straight out of the camera

  • @briandawkings yeah 60d is pretty awesome to start, kinda expensive if its your first camera, a t3i would probably do the job but the 60d has some additions when it comes to still photography compared to the t3i

  • dont expect too much from 17-50/2.8 lens

    just buy the cheapest 17-50/2.8

and complement it with cheap prime... 35/1.8 or 50/1.8

  • quick question, for a guy starting would you say a eos 60D is a good start?? cus well the 7D is amazing but its like twice as much as the 60D

  • Hiya Jared... I was looking for a lens of this type. A place I love to go to for objective reviews is dxomark. They rated the Sigma over the Nikon and Canon as well as the Tamron.

I actually have the Sigma on order based on a sale as well as the dxomark review compared to the Nikon, et al.
