This 1956 recording features Ella singing "Anything Goes," written in 1934 by Cole Porter for his musical by the same name. Since its 1934 debut at the Neil Simon Theatre (at the time known as the Alvin) on Broadway, the musical has been revived several times in the United States and Britain and has been filmed twice.
Ella is accompanied by the Buddy Bregman Orchestra,

Times have changed,
And we've often rewound the clock,
Since the Puritans got a shock,
When they landed on Plymouth Rock.
If today,
Any shock they should try to stem,
'Stead of landing on Plymouth Rock,
Plymouth Rock would land on them.
In olden days a glimpse of stockings
Was looked on as something shocking,
Now, heaven knows,
Anything Goes.
Good authors too who once knew better words,
Now only use four letter words
Writing prose,
Anything goes.
The world has gone mad today
And good's bad today,
And black's white today,
And day's night today,
When most guys today
That women prize today
Are just silly gigolos
So though I'm not a great romancer
I know that I'm bound to answer
When you propose,
Anything goes
The world has gone mad today
And good's bad today,
And black's white today,
And day's night today,
When most guys today
That women prize today
Are just silly gigolos
So though I'm not a great romancer
I know that I'm bound to answer
When you propose,
Anything goes...
Anything goes!

Cole Albert Porter foi um músico e compositor estadunidense de Peru, Indiana. Seu trabalho inclui as comédias musicais Kiss Me, Kate (1948 - baseado na peça de Shakespeare The Taming of the Shrew), Fifty Million Frenchmen e Anything Goes. Também as músicas "Night and Day", "I Get a Kick Out of You" e "I've Got You Under My Skin".

Porter przeszedł więc ponad 30 operacji,a ciągły ból i bezsenność doprowadziły go do stanów głębokiej depresji. Nie stracił jednak humoru, ani chęci pracy. Opowiadał, że leżąc na trawie po upadku, i czekając na pomoc napisał jedną ze swych najbardziej romantycznych piosenek At Long Last Love. Pomimo bólu i choroby, już w rok po wypadku można było podziwiać kolejny musical Portera, "Leave it to me" z uroczą Mary Martin i skandalizującym " My heart belongs to Daddy". Jednak sukcesy następnych czterech musicali nie uchroniły go od krytyki. Jego twórczość okrzyknięto "mniej magiczną". Po dwóch kolejnych klapach, wielu uznało go za skończonego.

Кол Портер - американский композитор, один из немногих авторов Tin Pan Alley, писавший наряду с музыкой и тексты к собственным песням. Портер прославился музыкальными комедиями: Kiss Me, Kate (1948) (по «Укрощению строптивой» Шекспира), Fifty Million Frenchmen, DuBarry Was a Lady , Anything Goes, а также песнями: «Night and Day», «I Get a Kick out of You», «Ive Got You Under My Skin», «Begin the Beguine» (в русском переводе — «Начало танца») и др. Критики отмечали изощрённое поэтическое мастерство Портера (с оригинальными рифмами и двусмысленной игрой слов), а также необычную для жанра сложность его композиций. В числе фильмов, музыку к которым написал Портер, — «Born to Dance» (1936), «Rosalie» (1937), «Youll Never Get Rich» (1941), «Stage Fright» (1950).

Great song, these lyrics seem like they still apply today, could've been written yesterday, & her delivery is supreme as usual, she was the best imo, simply fantastic!

I've heard the name Ella Fitzgerald but this is the first song I've actually heard her sing; I like it - clear voice, easy delivery, pitch perfect. Awesome.
