This video shows you how to set up Duet 2 in Pro Tools and begin recording quickly.

To follow this tutorial, you need to have
Duet 2, Mac OS 10.6.7 or greater and Pro Tools 9
Open Pro Tools and create a new session.

Click on "Setup, Playback Engine"

Set the buffer to 128, For lower latency you can set it to 64, but you may need to adjust the buffer higher depending on the size of the project you are working on.

For "Current Engine" Choose "Duet USB"

You will see the following message asking if you would like to proceed... choose Yes.
Click "OK" in the I/O window

Next open the I/O setup by clicking on "Setup, I/O"
Check "Input" and "Output" and make sure they appear as the do on the screen.
If they appear any other way, you will want to click on "Delete Path"... and then "Default"
Make sure to do the same for both Input and Output.

Open Maestro 2, found in the applications folder Select "Input"
Here you can select from the different Duet input choices

+4 and -10 bypass Duet's mic pre amp, and are a direct line level connection to the A to D converter.

"Mic" is for connecting a Dynamic or Ribbon Mic to Duet's XLR breakout cable.
If you are connecting a Condenser mic, you will need to click on the "48" button to turn phantom power on.

"Instrument" is for connecting a guitar or bass to the 1/4" instrument input.

Now click on "Output"
In the Output section you can select how you want to route Duet's four outputs, assigning them to the Main or Headphone outputs.

After connecting your headphones or monitors to Duet

In Pro Tools, choose the input and output in the mixer window.
Click on the "Record Enable button"
Adjust your input level with Duet or in Maestro you should now hear the input source you have plugged in.

You are now ready to record.

  • Seriously the most helpful YouTube video I've ever watched. I could NOT get my ProTools inputs and outs right and recording was on PAUSE until I watched this. Thanks very, very much.
