He was great playing bach. I can't saying anything about that. But this... The legato is just deleted, and it sounds like some wierd bach + midi. And I know, I will get som thumbs down, and some "OMG IT'S GOULD YOU FUCKING RETARD!!!", but Gould isn't equal to great and amazing.
Pian0O0, Who are you? Are you Glenn Gould? No. You are a mortal human, and you, like myself, could never know anything of music comparable to Gould. Gould found in music what humanity cannot express, and you are absolutely not worthy to criticize his performance. You're really in no place to criticize anyone's performance until you post a few of your own.
Gould was the greatest player of Baroque keyboard music of all time. The greatest Bach player the world has ever known and the most idiosyncratic musician of the 20th century. One of the finest pianists after Horowitz, without doubt.
But he was trained on Bach and loved Baroque music with a particular passion for the sonatas of Domenico Scarlatti. This influenced his style. However, I do agree that Gould's approach to this work is perhaps too extreme in its reflection of the earlier period.
It's one of Chopin's non-national music and Krystian Zimmerman said, "Chopin's music is universal". Musicologist David Wright said, "the quote attributed to Rubinstein, that only Poles can "play" Chopin is nonsense.
Thanks! Didn't mean to flag your response as spam. . . . I've never heard of David Wright but did he mean that Rubinstein was way off-base or that Rubinstein never said such a thing? . . . . Certainly Chopin's music is universal--but it sure seems that a lot of traditional western Europeans, etc. seem to have trouble with the unique rhythms in Chopin. . . . My comment was a little reactionary, I guess. After all, one of my favorites for Chopin is Cortot. The best: Josef Hofmann.
The Poles may have the same patriotic feelings as Chopin, but, in my opinion, that doesn't mean, they have deeper musical insight to understand his music. Barenboim, Kissin, Argerich, Horowitz, Pollini etc. None of them is Polish, and they're still great at Chopin.
