Hello,
In Spain at least the Suzuki Jimny (Samurai's new version) is a bit cheaper than SX4. The SX4 sold here has three modes: All time AWD, Auto AWD and 2WD -front wheels-. They're switchable by the driver with a button near the wheeldrive.
AFAIK the Auto AWD works like 2WD until the car looses grip, then the AWD is engaged automatically just while needed.
