Serve any value to who or what? They don't serve humans, and therefore they're useless? Humans are pretty useless, too.. what do we do? We deplete the ozone and drive other species to extinction.. hmmm.

Platypus's serve a huge role in their local ecology, and are a vital part of the food chains they play a role in. They are, in fact, a species, just one that has coevolved some very unusual traits for a mammal. They're very well adapted.

Interesting point CKSpaceMonkey. Can humans, being more destructive to the planet than any animal, comment on value and usefulness? If so, to what, other humans? If humans are not adding value to life on earth, then animals serving humans must also be useless. I am not sure where that leaves our peculiar friend, the platypus, but they do make me chuckle.

When we were kids growing up at Eungella the platypus would swim right up to us when we were floating in tyre tubes at broken river.
